Key Tasks
Begin planting spring-flowering bulbs, available from the garden centre early in the month.
Irrigate when needed, but slowly reduce watering so plants get ready for winter.
Plant new lawns.
Fertilize all plants (except roses) and lawns with organic or slow-release fertilizer, both available in our shop.
Allow lettuce to go to seed and feed the birds this winter.
Apply copper spray to selected fruit trees.
Check soil and add lime if required.
Lawn Care
Summer heat may have left lawns in a bad state, so now is a good time to reseed and / or lay turf.
This is a great month to scarify the lawn and follow it up with spiking to aerate the soil below the lawn.
If hollows or bumps are found, gently cut and roll back the turf, add or remove soil as necessary and then replace grass.
If six weeks have passed since your last summer feed it's time to fertilise again, but this time with an autumn/winter product
If worm casts have appeared, scatter them before mowing.
Later in the month aerate your lawn to open up the soil and improve drainage.
Veg Care
This for the next two months.
Choose the mild weather curing this period to plant or transplant the following: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, mustard, onions, radishes, spinach and turnips. Plant your second planting of autumn crops such as turnips, cabbage, and mustard.
Refurbish mulch to control weeds, and start adding leaves and other materials for the compost pile. Store your manure under cover to prevent leaching of nutrients.
Water deeply and thoroughly to prevent drought stress. Pay special attention to new transplants.
Harvest mature green peppers and tomatoes before frost gets them -- it may not come until November, but be ready.
Harvest herbs and dry them in a cool, dry place.
