Perennials & Ferns

Perennials

Perennials are as permanent as shrubs, but offer the variety of more delicate annuals, producing flowers around the same time every year. They die down over winter and as they re-grow in spring may need to be split occasionally when they get out of hand, but that gives you the benefit of more plants for free!

We have perennials of every shape and size, and for every season and situation. Some give form and character to your borders or provide weed-smothering ground-cover, and many of them need very little attention to keep them looking good.

When purchasing perennials you need to consider how tall they will grow, how much sun or shade they like, and whether your soil is right – that’s where the Fosseway Garden Centre team can help: we know the perennials that will perform best in your area.

Ferns

Demand for these ever-so-easy-to-care-for plants has grown every year, which pleases us a lot.

Some ferns make excellent house plants, but there are plenty of varieties of hardy ferns, and their delicate fronds can prove a wonderful contrast to perennials. They make good ground cover under trees and shrubs and thrive in shady corners – fabulous amongst rocks grouped around an overshadowed water feature. However, not all ferns need shade and some are very drought tolerant once established.

Tree Ferns Advice & Tips

Lasting With Care

Tree ferns thrive in a sheltered, humid and shaded position. They should be planted in humus-rich, neutral to slightly acid soil.

Extremely slow growing, these desirable plants only increase by about 2.5cm (1in) a year. Therefore, if you want a plant for immediate effect, you should choose a fern with a length of trunk that suits your planting scheme.

If you buy containerised ferns in leaf, plant at the same level as they were in the container.

Frondless lengths of trunk are also available. Plant just enough of the trunk to ensure the plant remains stable.

To encourage rooting, don’t feed the plant during its first year.
