About Our History
The Farm was bought in 1989, as house, farm and 100 acres of arable land.
A need to diversify was recognised and in spring 1990 we erected the first tunnel, bought in some bedding plants, and sold them over the course of the weekend. This was the very beginning of Fosseway Farm Nursery, known initially as Fosseway Farm Plants.
The nursery was open at weekends only for the first couple of years allowing Tim to continue to milk and farm, and then to 6 days a week which still gave one day a week to catch up on farming activities.
In 1997 we employed a Nursery Manager, changed our name, ordered staff uniforms, created contracts of employment, joined the H.T.A., computerised the accounts and the whole venture became much more of a serious business, 7 days a week.
Since that time the Nursery has continued to expand, now employing 7 full time employees plus two family members, and also a number of part time employees depending on the season. The Nursery has supported one member of staff through 2 years of college. On going training and up dates are provided for all employees.
Easter 2002 saw the completion of a major expansion programme with the conversion of the redundant grain store and dryer into a shop, giving us more retail space for garden sundries, furniture, barbecues etc. We improved the access to the nursery and created a larger car park, investing in automatic doors and tarmac!
Spring is our peak season. This year we have made over 1000 hanging baskets to order, plus supplying a large number of local hotels, tearooms and tourist attractions with hanging baskets and plants. We also offer a planting service and of course a delivery service, and regularly travel as far as London and Birmingham with deliveries.
Christmas is now our second busiest time. We stock probably the largest selection of Christmas decorations in the area and sell a full range of trees, fresh and artificial, wreaths, holly etc. We have for some years now supported Moreton Show with a trade stand and supply a number of other stands with plants for the Show.
We also regularly support local flower shows and “open gardens” with a stand, and Tim has also in the last few years become a well-known speaker at various clubs and organisations sharing his plant knowledge. He’s even featured on local radio! We have also run workshops for outside organizations on “Creating Hanging Baskets” and “Paint a pot” to name just two. We have a database of approx 1,300 customers who regularly receive our newsletter, which is created “in house”.
Saw us stop growing our bedding plants and dip our feet into buying in all of our bedding plants to keep down wastage and move towards being more of a garden centre rather than a nursery. However we do still grow all of our perennials and some shrubs from plugs.
The large expansion of the Garden Centre was finally completed in February of 2006. Timothy’s Tearooms opened to success and a new, enlarged shop area provided much more space for a larger variety of products.
The summer was a very successful time and saw some record temperatures in the UK, great news for us at Fosseway.
We also survived our busiest Christmas period yet, with all the extra space proving useful for a wider variety of decorations, trees and all the trimmings!
After lots of hard work our new Fosseway Machinery Department was opened mid February and has proved to be a huge hit, offering services for a variety of garden machines, parts & equipment and a delivery service.
Our shop area has seen many rearrangements and introductions of new product lines, mainly the new clothes and textiles department that has become a great success.
The Tearooms is still going strong, celebrating its one year anniversary in February. With bookings being taken for events such as Mother’s Day, Easter and birthdays and still displaying local artwork on its walls, it looks forward to a hugely busy summer.
Today we stock over 25,000 individual products, plants, gifts and fashion and looking into the future to deliver even more value and experience.
