October

Key Tasks

Clear beds of annuals by the end of the month and compost
Put sticky bands of tanglefoot around trees to deter winter moths.

Cultivate in interior regions; enrich in areas you plan to sow in spring.

Plant shrubs, perennials and spring-flowering bulbs.

Dig up tender bulbs for storage; apply bulb dust for disease control.

Dig up carrots, beets and turnips and harvest cabbage for storing.

Don’t forget to water plants close to the house or under rooflines.

Bring all tropical patio plants indoors; check them for pests before bringing inside.

Lawn Care

For the last cut of the year, simply 'top' the grass.

Clear fallen leaves from your lawn, if left they will encourage worm activity and can cause fungal damage.

Aerate the soil.

Brush or rake in a dressing of bone meal & sand.

Lightly mow newly-sown or newly laid grass, if weather is fine.

Veg Care

Choose the mild weather curing this period to plant or transplant the following: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, mustard, onions, radishes, spinach and turnips. Plant your second planting of autumn crops such as turnips, cabbage, and mustard.

Refurbish mulch to control weeds, and start adding leaves and other materials for the compost pile. Store your manure under cover to prevent leaching of nutrients.

Water deeply and thoroughly to prevent drought stress. Pay special attention to new transplants.

Harvest mature green peppers and tomatoes before frost gets them -- it may not come until November, but be ready.

Harvest herbs and dry them in a cool, dry place.
