June

Key Tasks

Plant out half hardy annuals.

Plant patio containers and water regularly.

In hot weather damp down the greenhouse floor to cool and dehumidify.

Pinch out the side shoots of tomatoes and tie in as required.

You can still plant container plants to fill any unexpected gaps.

Keep vegetables watered and supported.

Prune as required hanging baskets to keep the in shape, remove faded flowers and over vigorous growth.

Dead head plants if you don't require to save seed this will give more energy to produce more flowers.

Give hedges their first cut and trim topiary as necessary.

Take soft wood cutting of some shrubs, layer shoots of low growing species.

Sow biennials not sown last month.

Lift and either divide and replant or store spring bulbs. Divide congested flag iris as soon as their flowers fade.

Prune and deadhead spring flowering shrubs.

Lawn Care

Continue mowing regularly. If the weather is very dry, mow less often and leave off the grass box.

If your mower has a "mulching" attachment the best time to use it is when the grass is fairly short and dry.

Water the grass if it needs it.

For isolated deep-rooted weeds, spot treat with weed killer
If you haven't fertilised for six weeks consider another application.

Veg Care

Harvest vegetables such as beans, peas and cucumbers regularly to prolong production and enjoy peak freshness.

Eat "heartily" this month and in July and preserve enough to last during the winter months ahead.

For best results, harvest onions and Irish potatoes when two-thirds of the tops have died down. Store potatoes in a cool, dark place and onions in a dry, airy place.

Clean off rows of early crops as soon as they are through bearing and use rows for replanting or keep them fallow for autumn crops.

Water as needed.

Plant sweet potatoes and a second planting of peas.
