Grow Your Own

With the recession hitting pockets, a mounting preference for locally grown food and television programmes that show how easy it is (and how satisfying) to grow your own, there has never been such a demand for fruit and vegetable seeds, plants and trees.

Seeds

Seeds can be a cheap way of starting your vegetable garden, whether that’s a pot of herbs on your window sill, some saladings in a window box, a garden plot or an allotment.  There is always a sense of pride and achievement when your plants are big and healthy with a delicious, heavy crop.

Tomatoes are a perfect example of this, and in pots, hanging baskets or beds their brilliant colours can be complemented with a display of annuals, which you can also grow from seed – browse our seed stands to make your choice.

At Fosseway Garden Centre, because we want our customers to be assured of an excellent rate of germination from the seeds they buy, we only  stock  seeds from reliable suppliers, such as Mr Fothergills and Johnsons.

You will also find pots, trays, compost, dibbers and labels, as well as the best composts for germination and potting on seedlings. And sound advice on how to grow seeds – just ask a member of the team.

You don’t necessarily need a greenhouse or propagator (heat box) to germinate most vegetable seeds (but, of course, we can supply these too) – covering a seed tray or pot with a polythene bag and placing it on a window-ledge is a good method.

Plug Plants

There are many reasons why gardeners buy plug plants: perhaps seeds are too fiddly; you are starting your vegetable garden a little late or have limited space; you want to try a new variety or a range of varieties; you are new to gardening; or you need to replace a failed crop quickly.

Plug plants are young plants raised in small, individual cells, ready to be transplanted. They are an ideal choice, because you can be assured that the team here has given them a good start in life  in controlled conditions during the important formative period. In fact, plug plants grow rapidly and symmetrically in your garden, they can have a greater capacity to withstand pests, disease and drought and give a better crop. And they are much easier to weed than sown seedlings.

To maximise your harvest and make the best use of space, try introducing plug plants amongst existing plants – you can even grow some attractive vegetable plants in your flower borders. Ideally, go for companion plants – plants that thrive together or repel the insects that  Our team will be happy to give you tips and ideas for this.
We supply plug plants in different sizes, in different stages of growth.

Grow Your Fruits & Fruit Trees

Quality Fruits & Cane Fruits

Grow your own is most rewarding when you harvest a fruit crop and eat your own juicy strawberries, or your first homegrown apple or rhubarb pie.

We stock quality cane fruits such as raspberries, blackberries and loganberries, and shrubs such as currants and gooseberries, as well as blueberries and gojiberries, strawberries and rhubarb.

Right Size Fruit Tree For You

We also carry a range of the usual fruit trees: apple, pear, plum, peach and nectarine, in varieties suitable for average and smaller gardens – plus some more unusual varieties.

The Fosseway Garden Centre team cares about finding the right tree for the size of your garden, the soil, the aspect, the shelter or lack of it, so please do ask our advice on which fruit tree will be right for you. We will also endeavour to source particular named fruit trees.
