Sow Sweet Peas, Geraniums and Gazinia seeds. When conditions are suitable dig, lay turf, spike lawns, plant trees and shrubs. Winter prune Wisteria to create a good framework, shorten side shoots back to 2 or 3 buds, this will keep the shrub confined and encourage flowering. It will be necessary to prune Wisterias again in August to reduce vigorous growth. Clean and sterilize glass houses pots and boxes. Lift and divide early-flowering snowdrops while they are in leaf. Protect plants from frost if necessary, frost fleece is available to buy in our shop per metre. Sow early vegetables under glass. |

Very little to be done. Brush away fallen leaves. If you haven't already prepared in December the ground that is to be turfed or seeded in Spring then do it now. Keep off the grass...icy grass that is. If you walk on frozen grass the footprint you leave will show up later as yellow patch. |

Make a garden plan. Plan the garden to include various vitamin groups. Consider planting a few new varieties along with the old favourites. Plant the amount of each vegetable to be planted, including enough to can and freeze. Allow about 1/10 acre of garden space for each member of the family. Buy enough quality seed for two or three plantings to lengthen the season of production. Take soil samples if you have not already done so, and take them to your county extension office for analysis. Apply manure or compost and plough it under if you did not do so in the Autumn. Apply lime, sulphur and fertilizer according to the soil-test results and vegetable requirements. Buy 100 pounds of fertilize for each 1/10 acre to be planted (if manure is not available, buy at least half again more). Get plant beds or seed boxes ready for growing plants such as tomatoes, pepper and eggplant. Have beds ready for planting in early February. Check on your compost pile and make sure it is ready for use in the spring. |
