Garden Advice

Tips

House Plants
House Plants left alone during holidays like to be grouped together to provide humidity for each other. They may be left inside a plastic hood forming a miniature greenhouse to conserve humidity.

The Rose Garden
Continue to spray against aphids & black spot. Feeding with high nitrogen feeds should be reduced to ensure the hardening off of the growth. Start cutting out old wood from established ramblers. On all roses suckers are numerous now, trace them to root and pull them off.

Bulb Planting Time
Plant narcissi of all kinds, from the miniatures up to the large trumpet daffodils. Start preparing bowls of bulbs for indoor flowering in winter.

Stock Up The Bird Table
Animals of all kinds are already beginning to prepare for winter so step up the quantity and variety of food in your feeders and on your bird table. We have just recieved delivery of a wide range of products to cater for this.

FAQ's

How do I get my Hydrangea to retain its nice blue colour?
To preserve the colour of your blue hydrangea, a pH Value under 5.5 is required. For pot culture use Ericaceous Compost, and treat with Vitax Hydrangea Colorant as recommended on the container. For plants growing in the open ground the use of Vitax Hydrangea Colorant at planting time, and regular subsequent treatments will keep the flowers an intense blue.

My garden suffers badly from slugs, but I don’t want to use slug pellets as I have a dog. What can I use?
For those averse to using slug pellets because of pets, wildlife, children etc, various other methods of control exist: Growing Success Slug Killer is non toxic to pets and wildlife, and will offer control of both slugs and snails.
